The following is a written post from DML’s Facebook account. Earlier today, his father passed away after days on life support at a New York VA hospital. His heartfelt tribute can be read in its entirety below, as well as photos from DML’s childhood and from his father’s time in Vietnam during the war:
My father, Dennis Joseph Lynch, who served proudly as a MARINE in the unit known as The Walking Dead, passed away today.
His tour in Vietnam left him as proud as it did broken. PTSD and other war-related afflictions often got the best of him, unfortunately. But his pride in defending our nation was unmatched. And although many say I look a lot like him, truth is our greatest DNA match is our love of country.
I never served like he did, but I know he has been proud of my work at the border, my work in defending veterans, helping the homeless, raising the greatest family in America, my nonstop commitment to protecting those weaker than myself, and my unbreakable personality when it comes to never taking shit from anyone. These are things he taught me in one way, shape or form.
He will be missed by his friends, family, Marine Corp brothers, and his neighbors in Breezy Point, NY.
A quick story: During Hurricane Sandy the homes around him were destroyed. One of them was the home of a Marine. The Marine’s uniform was soaked in contaminated water. The sanitation guys were going to throw it out. I stopped them. I climbed into the bucket of garbage and removed the uniform. Then I had it cleaned professionally. My dad was brought to tears when he learned of my efforts. I think he knew I did it for him more than I did the owner of the uniform.
My mother, brother, my nephew, and my kids are sorry to see him go. But he’s headed to a better place.
The pictures attached include him and me when I was just a little boy. The photo on the left is of him in Vietnam. The photo on the right is one of me on Fox. He proudly used to tell everyone I was on TV, and loved it when his friends would call to say they saw me on Fox News.
Dad, My bet is you’re probably getting one more cocktail on the way to Heaven. Enjoy it, you earned it. It was not always easy to get along, and I wish we had more time to make up for the lost opportunities. But before you take that last sip and move on to the next chapter with God, I want to say thank you for defending the nation. I say thanks for giving me a home, my name, and a set of balls to stand up for what I believe in. Today feels final, but I salute you — and I know I will see you again on the other side one day.
