“The single best way to get people to self-deport is to cut off the jobs. The best way to cut off the jobs is with mandatory eVerify. Because when the word goes out that you can’t work in America unless you are a legal citizen, not only will illegals leave and the caravans will stop.”— DML

A Tough Pill to Swallow on Self-Deportation, But a Necessary Start

As the first charter flight of "self-deporting" illegal aliens took off from Houston, carrying dozens back to their home countries with a $1,000 stipend in their pockets, I felt a mix of frustration and cautious optimism. Let me be clear: I don’t like handing out cash to people who broke our laws to get here. How do we know they won’t just pocket the money and sneak back via unguarded waterways or remote border areas where patrol is sparse? Or worse, bide their time until Trump’s out of office? It’s a bitter pill to swallow, rewarding criminals with a taxpayer-funded farewell. But the hard truth is, it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than keeping them here.

The Department of Homeland Security estimates this self-deportation program, offering free flights and $1,000, slashes deportation costs by 70%. Compare that to the billions we spend annually on housing, feeding, and processing illegal aliens in detention centers, not to mention the economic strain on our schools, hospitals, and welfare systems. The math is brutal: keeping 30 million illegal aliens in the U.S.—yes, I believe the number’s that high—drains our resources far more than a few grand per departure. If they leave voluntarily, we save a fortune. It’s not ideal, but it’s pragmatic.

That said, one flight is a pimple on the elephant’s ass. With an estimated 30 million illegal aliens in America, this program is a drop in the bucket. The Trump administration’s effort is a start, but it’s like trying to bail out the Titanic with a teaspoon. To truly tackle this crisis, we need mandatory E-Verify nationwide—now. E-Verify, which checks workers’ legal status, would choke off the job magnet that draws illegal aliens here in the first place. Yet, President Trump continues to sidestep this proven tool, leaving employers free to hire undocumented workers and perpetuate the cycle. It’s a glaring oversight that undermines the whole operation.

Don’t get me wrong: I support cracking down on illegal immigration. But half-measures won’t cut it. These self-deportation flights are a step, but without E-Verify, we’re just spinning our wheels. Let’s stop rewarding lawbreakers and start enforcing the laws we already have. America deserves better than symbolic gestures.
