MY WIFE MARY at MAYO CLINIC
A REAL MEDICAL MYSTERY: MY WIFE
My wife’s ability to stand, walk, and maintain balance has been taken away from her without warning or reason.
Typically, I offer you stats, insights, and opinions on the news of the day. However, today on the DML Report, I am going to tell you about the medical mystery that has taken my wife, Mary, by storm. My hope is that there is someone out there who can offer real insight into a similar case and how it was resolved.
HOW IT STARTED: About eight months ago, my wife was in the kitchen and exclaimed, "Whoa!" I was only a few feet away and asked, "What's up?" thinking she had seen a big bug or spider. She responded, "I just lost my balance for no reason." We both brushed it off.
As the weeks progressed, Mary complained about her balance issues once or twice per week, although it was something relatively undetectable to anyone but herself. At the time, I was going through medical issues of my own, so we did not delve too deeply into her problems. As months passed, she attributed her periodic lack of balance to hormones. At 55 and still having her period, she thought it was tied to "lady issues."
Not receiving any pushback from doctors, Mary took a few lady-based supplements to balance herself out. None of them worked.
NEXT STAGE: As we headed into the new year, Mary's complaints about balance increased, and I could see her slightly sway when she stood up. She had her heart checked, and everything came back clean—ample blood was going to her brain.
The issue was real but not terrible by the time February rolled in. At the same time, she was not feeling well enough to do our weekly podcast, The Wine & Talk. Something felt "off," she said.
At this point, Mary started to get concerned. Her primary doctor couldn't figure it out. Her acupuncturist was baffled, and so was the chiropractor. As someone who has sinus issues, experiencing lots of congestion during the spring months, Mary figured her next step was to see an ENT.
After a checkup with the ENT, she was told to see a neurologist. This is when things got ugly.
NEURO DOC: Her appointment didn't last too long. The neurologist didn't like what he saw in terms of her balance, so he immediately ordered an MRI of her brain. This scared my wife, as it would anyone. I took her to the MRI scan, and when it was over, something strange happened. A migraine headache attacked her on the way home in the car. I had to pull over and let her out of the car. "I am going to vomit," she warned. For 20 minutes, we sat parked. She never vomited, but clearly, something was wrong. I have been with her for more than 40 years, and I had never seen her like this. Eventually, we made it home. Her concerns were now elevated, and so were mine.
A few days later, the results of the MRI showed nothing—she was clear of tumors, lesions, etc. The neurologist sent her back to the ENT. The ENT then sent her to an eye doctor. The eye doctor said she had a tracking issue and that she needed a neurologist who specialized in the nerves around the eyes.
SWAYING: At this point, Mary's condition was accelerating. The kids, her friends, and anyone in her presence could see something was wrong. Her walking started to look strange—as if she had been drinking beer all night long. Her ability to stand up without swaying was impossible. At this point, I demanded we go to the Mayo Clinic. That was ten days ago.
Every test was conducted: MRI, CT scan, lumbar puncture, blood tests, neuro eye tests, spine scan—the list is long. Ultimately, there is no infection, no inflammation of the brain, no parasites, no tumors, cancers, lesions, or damaged nerves. Mayo Clinic is the best there is in Florida and one of the best nationally, I do not question their testing or the results.
The eye-neurologist we met with is regarded as one of the best nationally. He said, “Mary, the eyes are the window to brain diseases and your eyes are perfect — you do not have a life-threatening disease.” He and the neurology team confirmed this is not vertigo, it is not the result of an injury, nor is it something that came from the jab (Mary did not get the Covid shot). They said we may never know what caused it — they have no idea how long it will stick around — but they do believe it is transient. Meaning, at some point it will disappear.
MYSTERY: This is a mystery, and today was her first day of physical therapy. Although we do not know what is wrong or how it happened, what we do know is that she cannot walk correctly, cannot stand on her own, cannot touch her nose with her index finger, and light hurts her eyes if she is exposed to it for too long. Everything else in her life is normal—she speaks without issue and has no brain fog. The Mayo doctors want her to undergo physical therapy so that her brain does not get comfortable with the sway and broken gait.
Today, on Facebook, I posted a ten minute video that explains everything in detail, and it shows videos of Mary experiencing her problems. I filmed her at home, and at the Mayo Clinic. I ask you to watch it. If you have a doctor who thinks they know what it is, please contact me at [email protected]
